Humanitarian Aid Aircraft Crashes in South Sudan
The incident occurred approximately 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) from the Leer Airstrip in Leer County, a region known for its oil production and located near the Sudanese border. The crash took place around 8:00 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT).
The plane, which was operated by Nari Air, had taken off from Juba with nearly two tons of aid meant for communities affected by severe flooding, as reported by a media outlet.
Bikram Rai, the deputy director of Samaritan’s Purse in South Sudan, informed the media outlet that the crash tragically resulted in the deaths of all three crew members.
He emphasized that the supplies were crucial for those in desperate need of assistance.
Response teams have successfully arrived at the crash site, confirmed Rai to the media outlet. Nari Air, a South Sudan-based airline offering cargo and passenger services, has not yet issued an official statement.
The company has also refrained from disclosing any details regarding the type of aircraft involved or the exact cause of the crash.
South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, has struggled with instability since the end of a five-year civil war.
The conflict, which began in 2013, was sparked by a power struggle between South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar.
