Sudan Reports 40 Fatalities, 2,300 Cases in Cholera

(MENAFN) Over 2,300 new cholera cases and 40 deaths were reported in Sudan's Darfur region within the past week, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned on Thursday, calling the situation the worst cholera crisis the country has faced in years.

"On top of an all-out war, people in Sudan are now experiencing the worst cholera outbreak the country has seen in years," MSF said in a statement.

The disease is spreading rapidly in overcrowded displacement camps, particularly in the towns of Tawila and Golo, where access to clean water and sanitation is critically low. As displaced populations continue to flee conflict zones, cholera infections are also crossing borders into Chad and South Sudan, the group reported.

According to figures released Wednesday by the Sudanese Ministry of Health, Sudan has recorded a total of 99,756 cholera cases and 2,475 deaths across 132 localities nationwide since the outbreak began.

Tuna Turkmen, MSF’s head of mission in Sudan, stressed the need for immediate international assistance. "The situation is beyond urgent," Turkmen stated. He urged a swift global response to provide medical care, improve sanitation infrastructure, and roll out cholera vaccinations in the hardest-hit areas.

"Survivors of war must not be left to die from a preventable disease," Turkmen added.

Sudan has been engulfed in civil conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, a powerful paramilitary faction. The ongoing war has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, fueling one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
